Golf- A History
Golf has long been thought of by the American people as a really boring sport played by the older generation by mostly men who wear funny colored pants. In recent years, this has been proven to be not true, as the revitalization of golf has taken over sports. Golf is a precision sport that involves going around a course in a series of eighteen holes, trying to get what is known commonly as a golf ball into the hole on the course in the fewest number of strokes possible. It is one of the few sports that does not require a standardized court that is the same each time one plays on it, but instead is played on a series of courses, each of which is different from the other. This helps keep the game interesting for those who are playing, and also adds a bit of a challenge into the game. Basically in golf whoever can hit the ball into the hole on the course in the fewest number of strokes wins the round.
The game was invented in Scotland around the fifteenth century. Some Historians can trace the game back to the Romans who played a game which involved hitting a stuffed leather ball with a bent stick. As you can imagine, this looks somewhat different from the game that we are used to today. The modern game that we know as golf was introduced by the Scottish, and at one time was actually banned as a sport by King James II, because according to the king, it was an unwelcome distraction from his archery. Scotland is also home to the oldest golf course in the world according the Guinness Book of World Records, as well as the site of the oldest golf tournament, which was first played on October 17, 1880.
