Golf Clubs and Counterfeits
For thousands of years, for every single genuine article of any kind that is for sale out in the world, there is a counterfeit trying to pass itself off as the real thing. The area of sports equipment and sports memorabilia is one of the markets that has one of the highest number of counterfeits. One area where counterfeiting is especially high is golf, and specifically golf clubs. Many of us are aware of how expensive golf clubs are, but many are not aware that the clubs that they purchase online for any number of amounts may not be what they think they are paying for. One of the reasons for this is because especially with golf, much of the product is imported from overseas, specifically from China and Taiwan. One of the brands that are the most victimized is Mizuno Irons. Mizuno is one of the premier Japanese sporting goods companies, and has been making sporting equipment since the early part of the twentieth century.
There are ways to spot fake irons however, and this can protect your investment as well as your golf game when you’re out on the green.
One of the problems is that there are too many people who have access to a design before it is created, and there seems to be a huge monetary incentive for someone who can get their hands on a design before it is released, causing their to be a lot of fakes out on the market. The incentive comes because the workers who manufacture the genuine clubs are not paid very well for their work, and if they can lay their hands on a design, and sell it to a counterfeiter, they stand to make more money from that one transaction than they would make in a year producing the genuine article. It is important that when using the internet to buy this kind of merchandise that a few pointers are in order so that the fakes can be avoided. The first thing is to not buy from any seller who has a lot of negative feedback, or who is a relatively new seller. Another important piece of information to ask for before purchase is the serial number from the set. All genuine articles have a serial number that is put on the product by the manufacturer. If they are unwilling to give you this info, it is a red flag for a fake. It is also important to remember the old standard “if it sounds too good to be true, it often is”. It is important to remember this when looking at the online ads. Another tip if you have already purchased the set is if it is a titanium set, a magnet will not stick to this particular metal. If it does, it’s a fake. It is important to also compare the logos and decals as well as the shape of the club to one online. Many times the counterfeiters make mistakes when it comes to creating these, and these kinds of mistakes are obvious forgeries.
It is important to not get discouraged, and to hold off on buying something like this and wait for the genuine article.
